The Defense, Space and Security unit of the Boeing Company announced in September that the world’s first all-electric propulsion satellite had begun operations.
Built by Boeing for Bermuda-based ABS, the satellite became operational Sept. 10 following an on-orbit holdover on Aug. 31. Dubbed ABS-3A, it is a 702SP (small platform) satellite, and intended to expand ABS’ communications services in the Americas, Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. It is the first of three 702SP satellites Boeing has been contracted to build for ABS.
“The operational ABS-3A satellite and ABS-2A, launching in early 2016, will further strengthen and solidify our global expansion and offer flexible capacity to our growing fleet,” said Tom Choi, CEO of ABS, in a press release. “We believe Boeing’s innovative portfolio can help us to affordably grow now and in the future.”
