Cold and gas losses in the transport and storage of liquid nitrogen

0

Most customers who are supplied with liquid nitrogen use the product in gaseous form. If there is a continuous gas requirement, the tank facilities installed at the customer’s site can be managed in a way that avoids gas losses.

However, cold losses are unavoidable. Since many users also want to make use of the liquid nitrogen’s inherent cold, it is important to keep cold losses to a minimum. Good thermal insulation of the components is a basic requirement for this, but operation of the tank facilities, as well as transportation and filling, have a major influence on the liquid gas’ utilisable inherent cold. Each degree (°C) of temperature increase in the logistics chain leads to a cold loss of approximately 1%.

Well-organised logistics and optimal operation of the tank facilities have a direct impact on the nitrogen consumption of the customer who wants to harness the nitrogen’s inherent cold. There can easily be a 10% difference in consumption quantity between a finely-tuned system and a standard supply. The Messer Group has a sophisticated calculation programme to determine the optimal data.
