Between 2005 and 2015 GDP grew by an average of 11.9% p.a., or -0.8% when adjusted for inflation. Over the past few years, the country has suffered from a meteoric rise in inflation - equaling 159% in 2015, and is also in the middle of it’s worst economic crisis in history.

In 2008 the operations of BOC Gases de Venezuela (founded in 1947) were merged into AGA Gas, which included the CO2 operations of Gascarbo (Productora de Gas Carbonico) in which BOC acquired the remaining 80% it did not own.
Praxair entered the country through the acquisition of Liquid Carbonic in 1996. Praxair has ASU´s in Barqusimeto (steel mill) , Jose (a nitrogen pipeline to petrochemical complex) and Puerto Ordaz (steel mill), and CO2 plants in Cagua (Combustion, Central Region) and Maracaibo (recovery from an ammonia plant, NW region).
A number of other local producers and distributors area also active in Venezuela - Gases Unidos de Venezuela C.A, was founded after Messer divested its Venezuelan business in 2002.

Linde has confirmed that a consortium comprising of the Messer Group and CVC Capital Partners Fund VII have entered into an agreement to purchase the majority of Linde’s gases business in North America and certain business activities in South America.
