Mexico targets European exports with $5bn LNG hub plan

Mexico is considering building a £5bn liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal to address European demand following ongoing structural supply changes as a result of Russia’s war with Ukraine.

President Andrés Manuel López Obrado identified the port of Coatzacoalcos in southern Veracruz as a potential natural gas export location.

It is the latest in a line of LNG proposals, after Sempra Infrastructure and Mexico’s Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) announced several agreements in July, which included developing an LNG terminal in Salina Cruz, Oaxaca, and an MoU was signed with TotalEnergies for the Vista Pacífico LNG terminal.
