Air Products’ Korea plant manager recently received an award in recognition of the company’s efforts to investigate a number of HF incidents in the country.

Kyoung Ho Choi, Air Products’ Ulsan, Korea, plant manager, recently received Korea’s President’s Award for Safety in recognition of the support the company provided to KOSHA (Korean Occupational Safety and Health Administration) and the Ministry of Labor (MoL) in their investigation of hydrogen fluoride (HF) handling following a series of HF accidents in the country.

During 2012, Korea experienced several industrial accidents involving HF that resulted in significant damage, numerous injuries and even some fatalities. Following these incidents, KOSHA and MoL investigated all companies using HF and, as a result, recognised Air Products’ design and protocol as the best practice and reference for other companies in Korea.

The President’s Award recognised Air Products’ high level of EH&S standards, its active participation in the KOSHA and MoL investigations, and its voluntary efforts to share HF handling best practices.

“At Air Products, safety has always been our number one priority,” said Wayne Mitchell, vice president and general manager, Electronics for Air Products. “This award not only recognizes K.H. Choi, but the entire Air Products team and reflects the importance we place on safety while producing the highest quality gases and chemicals for our customers.”

Air Products’ Ulsan, Korea, facility uses HF to manufacture nitrogen trifluoride (NF3), a leading chamber cleaning gas used by semiconductor and thin-film liquid crystal display manufacturers. Air Products pioneered the use of NF3 as a chamber cleaning gas and has been safely manufacturing and distributing the product for more than 30 years.
