FS-Elliott Co. is proud to supply compressed air systems to Penn State University, Pratt & Whitney, and the US Department of Energy – National Energy Technology Laboratory (DOE-NETL) for the recently unveiled Steady Thermal Aero Research Turbine (START) facility.
The new facility will run a Polaris® air compressor to test a new generation of High Pressure Turbine (HPT) systems in order to improve the fuel efficiency of jet aircraft and land-based power generation turbines.

“The Polaris® air compressor will provide the high performance and reliability necessary for an application of this nature.”
Due to the complexity of the project, FS-Elliott performed numerous flow and pressure studies in order to analyse the capabilities of the P700 frame.
“FS-Elliott was able to work with us by providing performance curves for the two stage machine at various off-design conditions, other vendors were not willing to dedicate their time to this effort,” said Dr. Michael Barringer, Research Associate for the Department of Mechanical and Nuclear Engineering at Penn State University.
“The team at FS-Elliott was an invaluable resource to our graduate students as they furthered their research using the data collected during the test stand set-ups.”
In addition to supplying the P700, FS-Elliott distributor, CH Reed, provided the heat exchangers, a chiller, heaters, test piping, valves, a closed loop cooling system and start-up/commissioning of all components for the START facility.
