A fast-emerging business growing, on average, at 30% per year for the past decade, Scientific and Technical Gases Ltd (StG) is firmly a UK success story.

With its registered office in Newcastle-under-Lyme, Staffordshire and as a member of both the BCGA and the Council for Gas Detection and Environmental Monitoring (CoGDEM), StG is a UK company through and through.

But StG is not just UK-focused – in fact, it’s the company’s excellent export exploits around the world that make StG such a success story.

Appropriately enough for gasworld’s December 2010 issue, as we move towards a brighter new twelve months, StG itself will be looking ahead optimistically to its 15th anniversary in 2011.

Having previously worked for Linde Gas and been associated with other industrial gas companies for 30 years, StG was founded by Tony Addison in 1996. StG has grown considerably since then and has now become one of Europe’s largest independent manufacturers of calibration gas mixtures, pioneering in particular gas supply via Non-Refillable Cylinders (NRC’s) in the safety and laboratory markets.

The latter part of those 15 years has seen a renewed drive in direction for StG, with the addition of Chris Street in 2007 and his subsequent role as Managing Director since January 2010.

After previous positions at Air Liquide and Air Products respectively, Street is now overseeing the ambitious export growth of StG, with the company continuing to look further afield to develop its business into new regions such as South America, Caspian Sea and North Africa.

Export excellence
StG already has a solid presence as supplier of gases in a range of cylinders from High Pressure Refillable Cylinders (up to 200 bar) through to the lower volumes NRC’s.

The company’s main customers include blue chip companies in the oil & petrochemical, gas detection, laboratory and industrial gases sectors.

Street explains to gasworld, “StG is a fast-growing business, growing on average 30% p.a over the past 10 years. It sees itself as dynamic and entrepreneurial, investing in R&D and product development, underpinned by an absolute commitment to quality.”

StG is a fully ISO 9001:2008 accredited company, Street is keen to point out.

“StG has established itself as a major supplier of calibration gases in NRC’s to many blue chip gas detection OEM’s around the world. StG is Europe’s largest manufacturer of gas mixtures in NRC’s for the safety and laboratory markets.”

“Having developed the new 112 litre NRC cylinder, doubling gas capacity in the same size cylinder, StG has been able to reduce handling, transport and gas costs for its customers and once again demonstrated its role as an industry innovator.”

Building on this strong platform, StG has ambitious plans for the future. The company is already an international player, supplying gases directly to more than 70 countries, with over 60% of its manufactured products exported from the UK.

This figure is expected to have grown substantially in 2010/2011, we’re assured.

“In addition,” Street continues, “StG has two joint ventures, one with Buzwair Industrial Gases in Qatar and another with Bristol Gas in United Arab Emirates (UAE) to manufacture and supply speciality gases in the region.”

“StG also has established distribution hubs for NRC’s in the UK, Dubai, Singapore, Perth, Sydney and Florida, with products available ex-stock.”

Street ran the London Marathon in 2009 and the UK’s Great North Run in September 2010, for charity, and is ready to ensure that StG has the legs to go the distance in the future as it accelerates its plans for growth globally.

Looking ahead, StG is aiming to expand its footprint further and add to its established network of agents in Asia, Australia and Europe.

“StG is continually looking to find excellent agents and distributors to support its business.”
