A Warm Welcome – Celebrating 20 Years of Growing the Hydrogen Economy

Sunny Columbia, South Carolina will be host to the 20th Annual National Hydrogen Association (NHA) Hydrogen Conference and Expo, to be held March 30–April 3, 2009 at the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center.

This year’s conference is titled “Celebrating 20 Years of Growing the Hydrogen Economy.” According to the NHA, they have been inundated with abstracts, an indication that this year’s meeting promises to be a popular destination.

Those flying in to Columbia will get a first glimpse of what this conference showcases. The Columbia Metropolitan Airport is testament to the progress hydrogen has made into mainstream America and the commitment South Carolina has made to furthering the hydrogen economy. Over the past year, the airport has undergone renovation that incorporates hydrogen systems available in the market today. This assimilation is in part thanks to last year’s winners of the (2008) NHA Hydrogen Student Design Contest. The 2008 challenge was to design airport infrastructure that utilized hydrogen systems and technology. The winning design, submitted by a group from Missouri University of Science and Technology, featured hydrogenfueled airport shuttles, fork lifts, and backup power systems among other technology. The airport had set the 2009 Conference date as the finish date for their renovation, so those passing through will actually benefit from hydrogen at work.
