Drax power plant breathes clean after 50 years

Renewable Energy Company Drax announced that it has officially ended coal-fired energy generation at its North Yorkshire power plant.

The Drax power station was once the largest coal-burning plant in western Europe. In its 50 – year heyday It generated enough electricity for two million homes, and in 1986 that capacity was doubled to 4 GW.

Since then, four of the powerplant’s six generating units have been retrofitted to run on sustainable biomass pellets, making it the single largest generator of renewable power in the UK. The biomass pellets are made from waste wood products, dedicated energy crops, and even uneaten food.
