Concrete is a ubiquitous part of modern civilization’s infrastructure—globally, an estimated 30 billion tonnes of concrete is used in buildings, roads, bridges and structures of all kinds.
While it is an incredibly versatile and relatively inexpensive building material, concrete’s fatal flaw is its massive carbon footprint. It is estimated that at least 8% of human-related emissions come from the cement industry.
It is obvious that concrete needs to radically reduce its carbon footprint. A number of companies have risen to this challenge and are producing low or zero-carbon concrete. But now a Finnish company is using concrete as a sink for carbon emissions.
