Preview: World Biogas Summit 2025

The World Biogas Summit returns to Birmingham, the UK, on 9 to 10 July, bringing together policymakers, project developers and technology providers to explore the role of biogas and biomethane in the energy transition.

Running alongside the World Biogas Expo at the NEC, this year’s Summit carries the theme “From Waste to Wealth: Powering Economies, Protecting Nature,” and will examine how anaerobic digestion (AD) can deliver on global climate goals while supporting circular economies.

The two-day programme opens with a series of keynote addresses from high-level representatives, including Dan Jørgensen, European Commissioner for the Environment, Oceans and Fisheries, Dr Peter Zeniewski from the International Energy Agency (IEA), and Martina Otto of the Climate and Clean Air Coalition.

Moderated by World Biogas Association (WBA) CEO Charlotte Morton OBE, the session sets the tone for the event’s focus on regulatory frameworks, financing mechanisms and international collaboration.

A core theme of Day One is how to scale biogas production globally. A morning session titled “Making Biogas Happen” will introduce the WBA’s new Global Biogas Regulatory Framework and ADCS International certification scheme. Speakers from the American Biogas Council, Global Methane Hub, and the UNFCCC will join WBA and ADBA to assess the barriers and enablers to deployment.

This is followed by a country-focused session looking at national strategies from Spain, Brazil, Poland and others, with input from energy regulators, developers and local trade associations.

Later that day, a gender equity panel will spotlight the role of women in the biogas sector, followed by a session on clean cooking applications, with speakers from Kenya, Haiti and Latin America. Both are expected to provide grounded insights into how AD is being deployed in off-grid and underserved regions, with practical case studies from NGOs and small-scale innovators.

Day Two opens with a keynote from Jean-Luc Fugit, President of the French National Council for Air and Climate, on France’s leadership in biomethane. This sets the stage for a broader policy discussion with French energy officials and representatives from TotalEnergies.

The morning continues with the launch of a new WBA report on Mexico’s biogas landscape, followed by a roundtable featuring perspectives from Africa, Asia-Pacific and Latin America on the commercial and policy levers needed to unlock AD growth in emerging economies.

Other highlights include a fireside chat on the role of oil and gas companies in scaling biomethane, a panel on digestate and renewable fertiliser, and a final session looking at carbon finance, life-cycle assessment tools and market-based mechanisms.

The event concludes with a closing plenary mapping the industry’s pathway to 2030, chaired by WBA and the UK Department for Energy Security and Net Zero.

Commenting ahead of the event, WBA CEO Charlotte Morton said, “The World Biogas Summit is where the key players will gather to drive forward the development of biogas worldwide and help #MakeBiogasHappen. It’s a critical game-changing event that we’re proud to host and that shouldn’t be missed by anyone interested in ensuring global energy, food and climate security for the decades to come.”
