Bulgaria’s largest gas distribution company Bulgargaz has carried out its first delivery of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from Turkey.
Having taken place at a gas terminal near the Turkish city of Tekirdag on Thursday, 13th April, the transfer was completed under the condition that the supplies come from countries that did not impose any sanctions, embargoes, or trade restrictions.
Although the first delivery was around 55 million cubic metres, an agreement signed between Bulgargaz and the Turkish Petroleum Pipeline Company (BOTAS) will see Bulgaria receive around 1.5 billion cubic metres of gas per year, according to Turkish Energy Minister Fatih Donmez.
“The agreement allows the use of the entire gas infrastructure for offloading, regasification, storage and delivery of equal amounts of natural gas to Bulgaria. This is key to our energy security,” he added.
