Foster Wheeler announced today that Foster Wheeler Energy Limited (FWEL), the UK subsidiary of its Global Engineering and Construction Group, has won the prestigious Five Star Occupational Health and Safety Management System Audit Award from the British Safety Council.

The award follows a Five Star Audit, in which the British Safety Council reviewed the overall health and safety management system of FWEL’s operation in Middlesbrough, Teesside, in the north east of England.

The internationally recognised British Safety Council Five Star Audit is a comprehensive, independent and quantified evaluation of an organisation’s entire health and safety management system, and is used by businesses world-wide to benchmark their systems against health and safety best practice.

The audit measures performance against key safety management indicators, identifies areas of positive/negative practice and provides a structured approach to continuous improvement, resulting in an overall numerical score of the organization’s performance. In 2013, the audit also increased its focus on safety culture, leadership and employee wellbeing. Organisations are rated from one to five, five being the top rating, to indicate the effectiveness of their health and safety programs. FWEL’s Teesside Office achieved a five-star rating, with a world-class overall audited score of 98.01%.

“To achieve this magnificent overall score is testimony to the commitment to world-class health and safety performance demonstrated by our Teesside team, underpinned by a five-star health and safety management system,” said Umberto della Sala, President and Chief Operating Officer of Foster Wheeler.

“It is clear to me that there is real and continued commitment, not only in Teesside but also across our organization world-wide, to our Realising Zero health and safety initiative, and to driving continuous improvement of our already world-class health and safety performance.”
