After the shortages of recent years and dynamics that reached a crescendo in 2013, a situation of both stability and over-supply returned to the helium business in 2014.

Helium still made the headlines last year with the start-up of operations at the Qatar II plant in Ras Laffan, but the global gases business in 2014 was typified by ongoing project activity, maximising efficiencies, mergers and acquisitions (M&A), and the increasing rise of new clean energies.

As previously demonstrated in parts 1-3 of this feature (see links left), a number of projects are set to be realised this year, from the addition of a new steam methane reformer (SMR) in Niagara Falls to the launch of the world’s largest carbon dioxide (CO2) purification and liquefaction plant in-between.
