Afrox is evolving and refining its technologies to increase productivity and limit emissions in the aluminium process chain.
Through its parent company The Linde Group, Afrox is adding technical competence and process knowledge to melting, dross handling, refining, extrusion and annealing applications.
Afrox’s oxyfuel solutions include a wide range of oxyfuel burners and technologies designed by Tier One Linde to suit different processes and requirements for aluminium melting. These solutions have shown to increase melting rates by as much as 100%, reduce fuel consumption by up to 50% and cut flue gas and emissions by up to 90%.
Melting is a core step in the processing of primary and secondary aluminium an in new and existing furnaces, but it is extremely energy intensive and can impact both the productivity and total cost of production.
Africa’s leading gases company offers a range of oxyfuel combustion technologies to streamline this process. Its AIROX® burner solution is an advanced tool for flexible and economic melting, allowing furnace operators to switch between oxygen (O2) and O2-enriched gases easily during the melting process and air during the holding phase for greater melting rates and lower emissions.
In addition, its WASTOX® technology has been designed to economically melt low-grade scrap and turns unwanted contaminants into valuable fuel. The solution uses O2 lances to combust emissions within furnaces that are simply installed and operated.
Simphiwe Molefe, Applications Specialist for Bulk Markets at Afrox, explained, “By increasing the amount of O2 in the melting process, you reduce the amount of inert nitrogen (N2) in the combustion reaction. This has several advantages which include increased thermal efficiency, reduced fuel consumption, improved control over the process and less fuel emissions.”
