Air Products has continued its major support of the South African Institute of Welding’s (SAIW’s) Young Welder of the Year competition, with Phillippus Terblanche taking this year’s crown.

The contest is aimed at the most proficient welders in South Africa in welding carbon steel, stainless steel and aluminium using four different processes. The contestants can be no older than 22 years of age.

The Tier One corporation has supported the SAIW Young Welder of the Year competition, now known as the Youth Welding Challenge, since its inception in 2004, which aims to develop the skills of welders in South Africa.

“We are privileged to make a contribution to the development and growth of young welders in the country”

According to Josua Le Roux, General Manager and Chairman of Air Products’ CSI committee, the sponsorship forms part of the company’s corporate social investment strategy that is focused on education and training of youth in the country, especially in an area such as welding where there is a shortage of skills.

Sean Young, Air Products’ Welding Specialist, stated, “As a leading supplier of welding gases, we are privileged to make a contribution to the development and growth of young welders in the country.”

“Welding is a critical skill in many industries and Air Products believe they can assist in creating an opportunity for young welders to showcase their expertise.”
