Air Products has invested in new hydrogen (H2) trailers which will triple its industrial gas transport capacity around Germany.
The new fleet can transport almost 50,000 litres of H2 at once, enabling the transport of approximately three times as much as the company’s previous convoy. The industrial gas giant called this an “unrivalled transport volume.”
Air Products has used state-of-the-art gas cylinders made of lightweight composite materials and trailers that boast the largest European-approved dimensions to maximise its transport capacity,
As a result, the weight of the vehicles has been reduced by 20% overall and fuel consumption has been signifcantly lowered.
The new fleet, developed by Air Products in cooperation with partners, incorporates modern Type 4 cylinder technology and optimises the sustainable transportation and supply chain for H2 supply.
”These are certainly the largest gaseous hydrogen transport vehicles ever launched in Europe”
Thomas Hollad, Air Products
It is believed that xperion Energy & Environment, a newly-acquired subsidiary of composite cylinder producer Hexagon Composites, supplied the X-STORE® cylinders after it received a substantial order from Air Products for high-pressure H2 containers in March this year.
Thomas Hollad, Liquid Bulk and CryoEase Asset and Transportation Manager at Air Products for the Northern Continent region, explained, “These are certainly the largest gaseous H2 transport vehicles ever launched in Europe. We literally use every centimetre of the trailer, which offers the largest possible loading area in European traffic law. This enables us to achieve the maximum transport capacity with a single trailer rail.”
A statement from the Tier One company suggested that investment in these new H2 trailers supports Air Products’ sustainability objectives and business strategy.
