An introduction to… Spinning rotor gauges in insulation

The Spinning rotor gauge technology (SRG) allows the precise pressure measurement of the insulation vacuum from outside the vessel. Only the simple pressure sensor, a ball in a stainless steel tube, is connected/welded to the vacuum vessel and stays there, well protected, for the lifetime of the chamber.

The sensing head/readout is mounted on demand and delivers pressure values form 10 to 1×10-6 mbar just by using electromagnetic forces.

SRG technology has now been used for more than three decades in vacuum calibration labs as a transfer standard. Previously, SRG systems were considered complex to operate and were therefore almost exclusively used in laboratories. That meant a main application of this technology was in the calibration of high vacuum measuring devices, for example in Ion or Pirani gauges (10-3 to 5 x 10-7 mbar).
