Ballard Power Systems will provide next-generation FCmove®-HD fuel cell modules – utilising Ballard’s LCS technology – to power two tractor-trailer trucks as part of an industry-lead $15m Alberta Zero-Emissions Truck Electrification Collaboration (AZETEC) project.
The AZETEC project is set to test the ability of hydrogen to fuel the Province of Alberta’s heavy-duty freight transportation sector. The project is seen as a first step in exploring a potential hydrogen economy.
Ballard will provide a total of 6 FCmove®-HD fuel cell modules, each generating 70 kilowatts (kW) of power. Three modules will be installed in each truck.
“The tractor-trailer trucks being used in the AZETEC project are the first fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) of this size and capacity to be built and tested anywhere globally,” said Rob Campbell, Ballard Chief Commercial Officer.
“We are delighted to expand Ballard’s participation in FCEV truck trials across a growing range of sizes and classes, as we demonstrate the compelling value proposition that fuel cells offer for heavy and medium duty motive applications requiring long range, rapid refuelling, heavy payloads and route flexibility,” Campbell continued.
The project will test hydrogen as a zero-emission alternative fuel to diesel, along with the refuelling infrastructure and other systems that would be required for Alberta to implement the new fuel solution.
The three-year project will also look into the potential to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions and airborne pollutants in Alberta’s freight transportation sector.
The AZETEC project is scheduled to run until mid-2022 and will involve the design and manufacturing of two heavy-duty, extended range, hydrogen fuel cell electric hybrid trucks that will move freight year-around between the cities of Edmonton and Calgary, Alberta.
