Fresh from the launch of an invigorated new website and being shortlisted in recent months for no less than five awards for its ‘excellence, innovation, and best practice’ by the Trade Association Forum (TAF), the British Compressed Gases Association (BCGA) has its sights set on a return to in-person events with its Annual Conference this April.

The conference will be held at The Marriott Hotel & Country Club, Worsley Park in Manchester on Thursday 28th April (2022) and will feature a range of speakers providing details on the latest developments and news across the entire compressed gases industry.

Several topics pertinent to the current position of the industry will be discussed, in addition to Brexit challenges and medical gases post-Covid-19, sustainability, the environment, and STEM, as well as technology, youth and the future of industry, and hydrogen.

Guest speakers will include Lord Karan Bilimoria of the CBI, intelligent leader specialist David Harman, and keynote speaker and former SAS soldier, Colin Maclachlan of Channel 4’s SAS: Who Dares Wins.

Commenting on the event, Ellen Daniels – CEO of the BCGA – said, “We have an exciting agenda for 2022 and, after a break of two years from meeting in person, hope to see as many people as possible in Manchester for the event.”

Daniels referred to the hiatus in physical events over the last two years at the hands of the Covid pandemic; in that absence, the BCGA delivered a virtual conference in 2021, held over two days and including the inaugural BCGA Industry Recognition Awards. The conference also saw the launch of a refreshed brand, with an updated logo for the association.

The return to an in-person conference for 2022 will build on all of this and more, and with so much to talk about in the compressed gases sector regarding the UK’s Covid-19 efforts, Daniels urged people to book their place as soon as possible. The BCGA has also issued a number of new Guidance Notes and revisions to Technical Information Sheets (TIS) in the last 12 months, which will all be discussed to some degree during the event’s customary overview of technical updates.

celebration, award, star

Awards

Following their huge success, the BCGA Member Awards will return for the 2022 Annual Conference, continuing to celebrate members’ contributions to their industries and communities, and judged by a panel of independent experts. The winners in 2021 were:

  • Outstanding Team of the Year Award (Large Company) – Air Products Procurement and Facilities Management Team
  • Outstanding Team of the Year (Small Company) – Speciality Oxygen Service
  • Consultant of the Year – Simon Fisher, Gas Con
  • Rising Star of the Year, (joint winners) – Connor Lakey, BOC and Kelly Vasir, Cavagna Group UK.

The return of the awards this year is widely seen as an area of excitement within the BCGA – and also of its ongoing commitment to promoting STEM in education. The BCGA has been heavily involved in STEM in recent years, partnering with several organisations promoting STEM subjects to schools, colleges and universities. The topic will also be discussed at the conference, on a panel including winners of the BCGA’s Rising Star Awards from 2021.

The conference will also the BCGA welcome Tim Hulbert back as BCGA President, after incumbent Lucía Sainz de Mier, stepped down due to work commitments abroad. Originally appointed in May 2018, Hulbert is Managing Director at Busch, and leads the BCGA’s Board of Directors, working alongside Daniels and Technical Manager, Jake Lake.

Going into 2022, the BCGA has a strong leadership team – many of whom are in high profile roles and are dedicated to sharing their knowledge and expertise to support members.
