The BCGA Annual Conference 2017 is underway in Manchester, UK with the official opening speech of new President Tony Edwards (Luxfer Gas Cylinders).

Returning to the Marriott Hotel and Country Club at Worsley Park, the event sees the BCGA (British Compressed Gases Association) once again throw the spotlight on safety and progress within the UK gases industry.

This year’s conference also aims to provide a platform for continued success, as Chief Executive Doug Thornton enthused to gasworld, “The calibre and expertise of speakers signed up for the 2017 conference reflects the scope and scale of our industry and its proactive, innovative and collaborative approach.”

“The conference goes from strength to strength each year and the programme in place for 2017 provides the platform for continued success.”

Around 150 delegates are understood to have made the trip to Manchester for the event.

The day’s agenda will review the BCGA Technical Committees’ publications and achievements, along with other keynote speakers presenting on some of the factors driving growth in the industry. These include:

  • Speciality Gases in Europe – Opportunities and Challenges for the Next Decade
  • Compressed gas security
  • Cryogenics: A Classic Enabling Technology
  • Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles (FCEVs) and market development

Record-breaking adventurer Brian Jones will also be taking to the BCGA stage as the day’s final keynote speaker, enlightening delegates on the technologies and (human) forces behind his pioneering 20-day non-stop, around-the-world voyage in the Breitling Orbiter 3 balloon with Bertrand Piccard, powered purely by hot air and helium.

A full review of the day’s events will be published to the gasworld website later today and will also appear in the upcoming May issue of gasworld magazine.
