Carburos Metálicos, a leading provider of industrial and medical gases in Spain, has hit a major milestone this year, celebrating its 120th year in business.
Having held 12 decades as a frontrunner in the Spanish industrial gas industry, Ahmed Hababou, General Director, signified that the company has become “one of the pillars that have strengthened and helped shape the industrial fabric of Spain.”
“We continue to collaborate with our clients in more than 30 different sectors of the industry to provide solutions and innovative products that help in their activity,” he added.
The company’s constitution was signed in Madrid on 19th November, 1897, and held an initial capital of one million pesetas.
Its activity began in a factory in Berga, Barcelona, producing calcium carbide in electric furnaces. Its first major project was launched in 1900 when the municipality of Piera inaugurated public lighting based on acetylene gas with carbide from that plant in Berga.
Today, the company produces more than 1,200 tonnes of liquefied gas per day. It owns 12 production plants, 14 packaging plants, two high-purity gas laboratories and a research and development (R&D) centre in Bellaterra and serves more than 100,000 customers.
The Spanish corporation produces, distributes and sells gases to the welding, glass, water, food, medical, energy, petrochemical, laboratory, freezing, refrigeration and beverage markets – to name a few.
Carburos Metálicos is one of just 41 Spanish companies founded in the 19th century that are still active today. It was acquired by Tier One player Air Products in 1995.
