For almost a century now, gas cylinders have been used with an ever-increasing degree of sophistication in the area of medical applications. The latter include both domiciliary, hospital and ambulatory use; each with their particular requirements. Initially of a seamless steel construction, they have now utilised different alloys and in the past couple of decades have even embraced composite cylinder technology.

The latter sophistication has been catalysed by the ever-growing need for efficient (lightweight) packages to aid ease of portability. However, in recent years there has been more emphasis placed on the entire package and not only the efficiency of the cylinder, with robust valving systems which prevent ingress of moisture, ease of portability (handles), built-in regulators on the valve, contents/gas flow gauges, and overall graphics/cosmetics.
