Eight large cryogenic storage tanks manufactured at Chart Industries’ New Prague, Minnesota, plant have hit the road.
Five of the tanks are 166ft long and will each store 127,000 gallons of liquid oxygen (LOX) and the other three are slightly shorter at 158ft but will each contain 168,000 gallons of liquefied natural gas (LNG).
The cryogenic equipment manufacturer said to minimise disruption for the local community, the tanks are being moved individually. The operation commenced on 23rd October and, over the following three weeks, the tanks will be taken to the Minnesota river port in Savage and loaded onto three barges before heading down the Minnesota and Mississippi Rivers and onto a ship to their final destination on the east coast of Florida.
The tanks have been purchased by an unnamed private spaceflight company to store fuel at the launch site.
