Today, natural gas powers about 150,000 vehicles in the United States and roughly 15.2 million vehicles worldwide. Natural gas vehicles (NGVs) are good choices for high-mileage, centrally fueled fleets and can be powered with compressed natural gas (CNG) or liquefied natural gas (LNG).

CNG tank technology and safety are improving and in many cases CNG can provide operators with good range for their operations. Natural gas is lighter than air and thus will normally dissipate in the case of a leak, giving it a significant safety advantage over gasoline or propane (LPG).

On a per gas gallon equivalent (GGE) basis, CNG costs less than gasoline. CNG also is cleaner than traditional fuel sources, like gasoline and diesel, which results in minimal engine wear and fewer oil changes. NGV owners benefit from lower operating costs due to reduced engine maintenance requirements.
