The Compressed Gas Association (CGA) announced the 2016 safety awards at the Safety Awards Banquet held in conjunction with the Association’s Annual Meeting in St. Petersburg, Florida.

“The dedication to safety exhibited by the companies and the individuals we honor each year makes our industry safer for our employees, our distributors, our customers, and the public,” said Michael Tiller, CGA’s President and CEO.

Fleet Safety Excellence Award

Recognizes outstanding safety performance among the industry’s bulk and cylinder truck delivery fleets. The award is based on a CGA member company’s total Vehicle Accident Frequency Rate.

There are four categories for this award, two each for Bulk Vehicle Fleets and Cylinder Vehicle Fleets. The winners were:

Bulk Gas Transportation:

  • Less than 20 million miles – Western International Gas & Cylinders, Inc.
  • More than 20 million miles – GenOx Transportation, Inc.

Kevin Mathews, President of GenOx, was on-hand to accept the award and said, “Our team at GenOx is extremely proud of our achievement and we credit our drivers, our customers, and our employees for partnering to build and continuously improve upon a strong culture of safety.”

Cylinder Gas Transportation:

  • Less than 3 million miles – Butler Gas Products
  • More than 3 million miles – American Air Liquide Holdings, Inc.

Butler Gas Products President and CEO Jack Butler commented, “Our first question that demands a ‘yes’ is always ‘Is it safe?’ All our distribution professionals, safety committee members, strategic leaders, and all BGP associates made this award happen. This is a very big deal and I am very proud of our team.”

Leonard Parker Pool Safety Award

Presented to the participating CGA member companies that have recorded the greatest improvement in safety performance during the previous two years, and are based upon the total recordable case incidence rates as defined by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration. There are two divisions of the award based on employee exposure hours. The winners were:

  • Group 1 – More than 2 million employee exposure hours – Chart Industries Inc.
  • Group 2 – 2 million or less employee exposure hours – CTR Inc.

CGA/GAWDA Distributor Safety Award

Honoring the participating GAWDA distributor member companies that have shown the greatest improvement in safety performance.

There are two divisions of the award. The winners are:

  • Group 1 – More than 100,000 employee exposure hours – Coastal Welding Supply
  • Group 2 – 100,000 or fewer employee exposure hours – Wagner Welding Supply

New Committee Member of the Year Award

Recognizing an individual with less than three years of CGA committee participation for their character, commitment, and contribution to uphold and further the mission of the CGA. The award was presented to David O. Bowen of Air Liquide USA, LLC.

Charles H. Glasier Safety Award

Presented annually to an individual in recognition of their safety leadership in the industrial gas industry. The award was presented to John J. Anicello of Airgas Inc.

Environmental Recognition Award

Presented to a CGA member facility, team, or individual who has demonstrated environmental excellence through environmental accomplishments going above and beyond regulatory requirements. Awards were given for the following projects:

  • Air Liquide Industrial Gas Services: Dual Mode Nitrogen Pumper Truck Redesign
  • Linde LLC: Linde Bulk Fleet Environmental Impact Reduction Initiative
  • Matheson: Caustic Waste Utilization

CGA Canada Morris Gold Award

Recognizing outstanding and long-term contributions made by an individual through leadership and participation in CGA Canada and the compressed gas industry. Presented to Hasan Rahal of Praxair Canada Inc.

H. Emerson Thomas Lifetime Achievement Award

Sponsored by CGA, and established in 1997, the award is presented to an individual involved in CGA activities in recognition of leadership in standards development, safety procedures, and/or regulatory affairs. Presented to William H. Barlen of Barlen and Associates.
