Although not common within the industry, gas cylinder accidents do occur, and over the past several years these incidents — most of them small and isolated — have caused property damage, injuries, and even death. As just one example, in 2015 a worker at a Florida industrial gas company was killed instantly, and another seriously injured, when a cylinder they were moving explode

When it comes to cylinders, the potential for danger always exists for distributors and gas companies, but the risk can be managed at the filling stage, says Michael Dodd, Principal at MLD Safety Associates, and the DOT, OSHA, EPA, and Security consultant for the Gases and Welding Distributors Association (GAWDA).

“It’s an extremely important topic,” Dodd says. “I conduct high pressure cylinder, liquid container, and carbon dioxide cylinder filling classes for GAWDA members all across the country, and there are four items that I stress during my training classes.”
