Denver to Host Worldwide Welding Event

0

Want to get involved in welding on a global level? Then you should know about a major international event in the world of welding that will be coming to the United States this summer. The International Institute of Welding (IIW) plans to hold its 65th Annual Assembly July 8–13 in downtown Denver, Colorado, at the Hyatt Regency Hotel and Colorado Convention Center.

Though IIW meets each year, its Annual Assembly is not often held in the United States, and it provides a unique opportunity for those in welding to meet with their counterparts from around the world. Sometimes referred to as a “world welding summit,” the meeting will bring together influential welding experts from more than 50 countries for IIW Working Unit meetings, as well as social events, technical tours, and more. In addition, the IIW Annual Assembly will be accompanied by an IIW International Conference on July 12–13, “Welding for Repair and Life Extension of Plants and Infrastructure.”

Of course, mid-summer is also an ideal time to add some vacation in the beautiful state of Colorado, with its dramatic mountain vistas and four National Parks: Rocky Mountain, Mesa Verde, Great Sand Dunes, and Black Canyon of the Gunnison. Many attendees will take the opportunity to combine the IIW Annual Assembly with some wellearned leisure time in the cool and scenic Mountain West.

Welding societies and institutes from 13 countries (including the US) founded the International Institute of Welding in 1948. The organization’s original goals included promotion of best joining practices worldwide, and creating an international medium for information exchange on rapidly developing welding technologies and applications. The IIW has 54 member countries today and is widely known for its effective international collaboration on welding topics. Its Technical Commissions and Working Units cover such diverse areas as arc welding and filler metals, resistance and solid-state welding, thermal cutting, high-energy beam welding, welding terminology, nondestructive testing, behavior of metals, health and safety, weld fracture avoidance, pressure vessels and boilers, welded pipelines, production systems involving welding, fatigue of welded structures, welding education and training, design for welding, polymers and adhesives, brazing and soldering, welding physics, welding research activities, micro- and nano-joining technology, automotive and road transport welding, shipbuilding, standardization, and quality management in welding. In addition, the IIW publishes its own research journal, Welding in the World.
