Driving a zero emissions future – A perspective from Linde Gases

As has been extensively reported this year, thousands of children in London school districts are being exposed to potentially prohibited levels of air pollution. The various volatile organic compounds (VOCs) which largely constitute the automotive emissions primarily responsible, can contribute to or aggravate lifelong health problems, such as asthma, lung and heart diseases.

And the UK capital is not alone in combatting an air pollution crisis – major UK conurbation centres such as Birmingham, Derby, Leeds, Nottingham and Southampton are, according to experts, also badly affected.

In response to calls for fuels to emit fewer harmful pollutants, to diversify fuel sources and to enable sustainable transportation, a spectrum of new generation fuels has emerged. Hydrogen is an ideal replacement for fossil fuels such as coal, oil and natural gas in powering engines and not only does it produce zero emissions, but it has the full potential to be a clean energy carrier harnessing renewable energy sources – the Holy Grail of truly renewable energy.
