Chemistry and the economy: 2018 outlook


Every six months, the American Chemistry Council (ACC) does a survey of the chemical industry. Resident expert economist, Paul Hodges, examines the rises and falls in the economy and presents his views on the underlying forces driving the market.

In his presentation of November 8, 2017, “Chemistry and the Economy: 2018,” sponsored by the American Chemical Society, Hodges discussed four key scenarios that could challenge today’s “business as usual” mindset in 2018. Hodges finds “the idea that we are in the midst of a synchronized global recovery, highly imaginative.” He believes economists are being overly optimistic and that current trends in chemical capacity utilization and production do not support many GDP growth scenarios.
