In 1894, the British scientists Lord Rayleigh and Sir William Ramsay independently made crucial observations that led to the identification of a new gas. Rayleigh had noticed that nitrogen extracted from the air was denser than nitrogen obtained from chemical compounds. Through a series of experiments, the two scientists discovered that a previously unknown gas was present in the air, which possessed a higher density than nitrogen. This gas was eventually named ‘argon’ after the Greek word ‘argos’ – meaning ‘inactive’ or ‘lazy’, reflecting its lack of chemical reactivity.
