Despite its inert nature and lack of reactivity, argon possesses a captivating story that stretches from the depths of ancient discoveries to the cutting-edge realms of modern technology. From illuminating the wonders of deep space to revolutionising industrial processes, argon’s extraordinary properties have propelled it into the spotlight.
In 1894, the British scientists Lord Rayleigh and Sir William Ramsay independently made crucial observations that led to the identification of a new gas. Rayleigh had noticed that nitrogen extracted from the air was denser than nitrogen obtained from chemical compounds. Through a series of experiments, the two scientists discovered that a previously unknown gas was present in the air, which possessed a higher density than nitrogen. This gas was eventually named ‘argon’ after the Greek word ‘argos’ – meaning ‘inactive’ or ‘lazy’, reflecting its lack of chemical reactivity.
