How oxygen therapy at home is evolving


Across the UK, US, and Europe, oxygen therapy is moving out of the hospital and into the home. Over 1.5 million Americans now rely on supplemental oxygen outside of clinical settings, and tens of thousands of patients in the UK and Europe do as well.

What’s behind this transition? An ageing population and the rise of chronic respiratory diseases like COPD is one reason, as healthcare systems look to reduce hospital burdens and improve patient quality of life. But this homeward migration of medical oxygen brings with it challenges – from fire safety risks and logistical hurdles to gaps in patient training and device shortages. 

The good news, though, is that many challenges are being confronted and fixed.
