Medical oxygen needs to reach another billion people


Despite record spending on oxygen infrastructure during the Covid-19 pandemic, vast swathes of sub-Saharan Africa remain without reliable access to medical oxygen.

Pressure swing adsorption (PSA) plants meant to boost supply often sit idle, crippled by power cuts, broken parts and a lack of trained personnel.

For many rural clinics, oxygen cylinders arrive only sporadically, if at all, having been carried hundreds of kilometres by diesel trucks.
