The Rocky Mountains is the largest mountain range in North America, spanning 3,000 miles from the northernmost part of western Canada to New Mexico in the southwestern US. Indigenous communities have lived in and around the Rockies for thousands of years, relying on the land for sustenance, spiritual practices, and community life. Historically, the region has had a relatively low population density, with an average of four people per square kilometer. The population is thought to have grown rapidly between 1950 and 1990.
