As many of us learn in school, there are three states of matter: solid, liquid and gas. Carbon dioxide (CO2) can exist in each of those states. Most commonly it’s a gas, but it can also be a liquid in pumps or dewars, and a solid in the form of dry ice.

These states of CO2 have been well explored across the industrial gas market for many years, but for Illinois-based Weldcoa a niche has been found in between two states of matter. It is known as the supercritical stage.

Supercritical CO2, or sCO2, takes on several beneficial characteristics of both a gas and a liquid product. The very nature of supercritical CO2 means that it can adopt properties midway between a gas and liquid state and therefore unlock additional gains in efficiency and stability.
