Uncertainty for H2Hubs and 45V: What now for US hydrogen?


Late last year, I said on gasworld’s 1895 podcast that the first two quarters would be telling of the Trump administration’s intent on clean hydrogen. But I don’t think we expected this.

As I write this in May, the Section 45V clean hydrogen tax credit under the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) is under fire. A House committee has approved a tax package that looks to repeal the lucrative incentive.

Despite a slew of attempts by Democrats to rewrite the package, the House Ways and Means Committee approved the so-called ‘One Big, Beautiful Bill’ on a party-line 26-19 vote after a marathon session that went on through the night.

Under the proposal, which will now head to the House floor, hydrogen projects that enter construction after 31 December 2025 will not be able to claim 45V, effectively gutting its long-term, widespread value.
