Will BECCS change the carbon capture market?

When the Drax business first started out in 1974, it was very different to how it is today. Pivoting its focus from coal to biomass was a big move, but a change that needed to happen. With that transition, the company now has some huge goals underway as it looks to operate its unique bioenergy with carbon capture and storage sites by 2030 in both the US and UK.

Bioenergy with carbon capture and storage – or BECCS, for short – is the process of capturing and permanently storing carbon dioxide (CO2) that is generated during the production of electricity from sustainable biomass. The process is the only carbon removal technology that can also simultaneously generate low-carbon renewable power.

“It’s a simple coming together of biomass power generation and post-combustion carbon capture and storage,” Ross McKenzie, Director of Corporate Affairs at Drax Group, tells gasworld. “The two technologies have been proven at scale time and time again, but have never been merged into one system.”
