Honeywell Process Solutions (HPS), an automation control specialist, has developed a new programmable logic controller (PLC) to add to its next generation range, leveraging its power of the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT).
The new ControlEdgeTM device, which uses built-in cyber security, has been combined with Honeywell’s Experion® Process Knowledge System, providing secure connectivity and device integration from multiple vendors.
It is the first PLC to offer Universal input/output (I/O) – enabling remote configuration and late design change flexibility for improved project implementation.
Jason Urso, Vice-President of HPS’ Process Measurement and Control Business, explained some of the advantages of using the new instrument, “Projects that combine both Experion and ControlEdge PLC can benefit from substantially reduced project risk, eliminate the impact of late I/O changes and dramatically simplify project execution.”
This integrated offering provides significant lifecycle cost savings, less engineering and higher reliability
“Further, with Honeywell providing both distributed control systems (DCS) and PLC, we simplify process operations by providing equipment with common lifecycle and a highly reliable integration connection versus a custom interface. This integrated offering provides significant lifecycle cost savings, less engineering and higher reliability.”
The ControlEdge PLC is aimed towards process industries that require discrete control for specific PLC applications, such as water treatment and balance of plant (BoP) modular equipment.
Honeywell’s IIoT portfolio of technologies aims to help manufacturers leverage data in order to operate plants more safely and effectively. It is understood that this shift towards acquiring in-depth information of machinery and how it operates represents the beginning of the potential transition towards plant digitalisation.
