Safely used in industry for more than five decades, the world currently produces more than 65 million metric tonnes of hydrogen annually1 for use in more than a dozen industries.

But in recent years the development of fuel cell technology has created new applications that are closer to consumers and this is causing heightened safety concerns about undetected hydrogen leaks.

Current electronic sensors are considered expensive in some quarters and not particularly effective at detecting small-to-medium leaks, because hydrogen gas dissipates rapidly when leaked. DetecTape® – a low-cost hydrogen leak detection tape developed by Element One, Inc. and MSP, Inc. – is an effective complement to active sensors in piping fittings and valves.
