Hydrogen and nitrogen atmospheres are used in a variety of industries including metals, glass, foods chemicals, electronics, and clean energy.

Relatively small volumes of hydrogen (< 1 mmscfd) are supplied in bulk by trailer or produced on-site by electrolysis, methanol, and ammonia dissociation or steam methane reforming. While steam methane reforming is the dominant method of producing hydrogen at a relatively large scale (> 1 mmscfd), this technology has not yet been widely adopted at a small scale due to cost and reliability considerations.

This article provides an overview of an innovative hydrogen generator based on proven steam methane reforming technology. Linde’s HYDROPRIME® plants are compact, efficient, and flexible. Ten units have been built and nine placed in commercial operation for an extended period of time, demonstrating their performance in a variety of applications all over the world.
