James Russell Engineering Works, Inc. (Russell Engineering) (russelleng.com) was established and has been in continuous operation in Boston, MA since 1874. Owned through five generations by the Russell family, the company started as a designer/builder of large-scale metal fabrications and pressure vessels, including steam boilers and high pressure process equipment.

Customers in its middle years included Dow, Monsanto, and DuPont, and later NASA. In those middle years Russell also built equipment for the US Navy including ocean-going barges and amphibious landing craft that were used in the Atlantic and Pacific theaters of WWII.

After significant changes in its markets during the late 1950s, Russell’s core strengths in engineering, design, and fabrication of advanced process equipment, and its highly skilled aluminum welding capabilities led it into the then fast growing market for cryogenic storage and transportation equipment. Because of this expertise, Russell decided to design/build what at the time were considered difficult to fab cryogenic aluminum trailers. Today, according to David Hahn, Russell’s General Manager, “We are of the world’s most skilled and experienced suppliers of over-the-road trailers, and are recognized for high quality design and fabrication of tankers used for hauling liquid nitrogen (LIN), liquid argon (LAR), and liquid hydrogen (LH2), offering maximum payloads, with minimum tanker maintenance costs.”

Since its inception, Russell Engineering has developed the reputation for designing and building products with uniquely reliable and efficient operating characteristics, like the six axle 13,000 gallon LIN trailer built in 2003 to withstand the rigors of Michigan’s hard and frost-heaved winter roads. This trailer was able to maintain its high payloads within the state’s demanding road regulations during the rigors of winter there and led to two repeat orders for multiple units.
