The Brief from Budapest: Crystal ball gazing?

French mathematician, physicist, and philosopher of science Jules Henri Poincaré once stated, “It is far better to foresee even without certainty, than not to foresee at all.”

Published in his body of work The Foundations of Science (1913) over a century ago, Poincaré was referring to the wider aim of science as a theory of prediction rather than explanation.

But it resonates with me today, here in Budapest, for very different reasons.
