Malaysia, particularly Penang, continues to gain momentum in enhancing the quality of healthcare through innovative technology and best practices.

This has placed the island-state on the global map, attracting the interest of patients from around the world.

According to data from the Malaysia Healthcare Travel Council (MHTC), Malaysia is among the most travelled destinations for medical tourism with 1.2 million medical tourists visiting Malaysia in 2018.

Within Malaysia, Penang is the top medical tourism destination, generating 40-50% of the country’s medical tourism income.

In 2017 alone, Penang’s healthcare industry generated some RM500m ($165m) in revenue.

“Penang continues to shine in medical tourism. The state’s popularity in the medical tourism industry has attracted many visitors for treatment in line with our aspiration to make Penang an ideal health tourism hub,” Penang’s Chief Minister Yang Amat Berhormat Chow Kon Yeow said.

“This has been possible through smart collaborations between the private and public sectors as sharers of knowledge, technology and innovation.”

“This greatly helps to advance the competitiveness of the healthcare industry, and in turn benefits patients.”

“I encourage more parties to step forward and work with us through such collaborations that essentially drive economic growth and enhance quality of life in line with the state government’s Penang 2030 Vision.”
