The Northern Appalachian Region of the US is being targeted by a group of industry experts wanting to develop a low-carbon hydrogen hub as they look create a national model for sustainable energy and production systems.
EQT Corporation, Equinor, GE Gas Power, Marathon Petroleum, Mitsubishi Power, Shell Polymers and US Steel on Thursday (3 Feb) joined forces to slash emissions in the industrial base, which includes Ohio, Pennsylvania and West Virginia.
Hydrogen production and utilisation will be a major aspect of the hub. In order to effectively carry out such plans, however, the consortium is looking to develop a collaborative network to engage with both the private and public sectors.
To further help reduce emissions in the region, carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CUUS) technology will be deployed. If paired with the hydrogen production aspect of the hubs, this will result in blue hydrogen production.
As well as boosting the Northern Appalachian Region’s hydrogen economy and focus on clean technologies, it is also hoped the effort will generate thousands of jobs and protect already withstanding jobs.
On the plans, Rob Wingo, Executive Vice-President of Corporate Ventures at EQT Corporation, said, “We look forward to working with other industry leaders to support the development of one or multiple low-carbon energy hubs in North Appalachia.
“Our region has an abundant source of low-cost, low emissions-intensive natural gas which can be converted to low-carbon fuels and used to reduce our country’s carbon footprint. At EQT, we see a significant opportunity to expand beyond our existing business by leveraging this advantage to develop low-carbon fuel production and CCUS opportunities.”
Bill Newsom, President and CEO, Mitsubishi Power, added, “Developing a hydrogen hub in the Tri-State Region will be critical to achieving the aggressive net zero carbon goals. Mitsubishi Power realises that we need to assemble teams with complementary expertise across the public and private sectors.
“This new alliance creates a collaborative network bringing together diverse companies and groups to solve one of the toughest challenges our industry is facing. Together with our customers and partners, we are creating a change in power.”
