Acetylene might be the most popular fuel gas for the metal working industry but switching to alternative fuel gas has multiple benefits and savings. There are safety, environmental, availability, and cost advantages to adopting propane-based fuels.
To begin with, using propane-based fuels instead of acetylene is a lot safer. There’s a volatility with using acetylene as well as manufacturing it. An acetylene manufacturing plant explosion is not uncommon, and the main ingredient calcium carbide is a toxic and highly dangerous, corrosive chemical.
Number two, when acetylene burns it produces soot (carbon black) and carbon monoxide while propane-based alternative fuel’s only by-products are H2O and CO2. There are no known cancer-causing by-products produced when burning propane alternative fuels.
