GTI, a non-profit technology organization based in Illinois, is gearing up for a defining phase in its $122m Supercritical Transformational Electric Power (STEP) pilot plant, which is known as STEP Demo.

The 10MW test facility is under construction at the Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) in San Antonio, Texas, with the aim being commercialization  of power plants with higher efficiency, reduced costs, and lower emissions. GTI and its project partners – SwRI and GE Global Research – seek to prove the supercritical CO2 (sCO2) cycle to be a solution for clean, lower-cost electric power technology.

The SwRI site in San Antonio has recently been cleared, a gas supply line has been installed and general contractor work is just starting out. The project is aiming for completion and in September 2022 and will be among the largest demonstration facilities for sCO2 technology in the world.
