Houston is often described as the energy capital of the world with more than 500 oil and gas companies based there, collectively contributing a large carbon footprint. But Houston could also soon be widely known as the home of breakthrough technology in how electricity is produced… with zero emissions.
NET Power is fine-tuning its “revolutionary” clean technology that makes electricity without emissions by heating carbon dioxide (CO₂) – instead of emitting it – to drive turbines at a $150m test plant in La Porte, about 30 miles from Houston city center.
NET Power – owned by 8 Rivers Capital, Exelon Generation, McDermott and Oxy Low Carbon Ventures – is in the final phase of its operational testing and plans on selling power into the local grid soon. If successful, it could have a huge impact on the battle against climate change as electricity production is the equal largest source of greenhouse gas emissions in the US, accounting for 28% along with transportation according to 2016 statistics from the US Environmental Protection Agency.
