Beijing Peking University Pioneer Technology Co. Ltd (PKU PIONEER) has recently signed an agreement with Xinjiang Tianye (Group) Co., Ltd for the use of its carbon monoxide (CO) purification technology.

Beijing Peking University Pioneer Technology Co. Ltd (PKU PIONEER) has recently signed an agreement with Xinjiang Tianye (Group) Co., Ltd for the use of its carbon monoxide (CO) purification technology.

The Pressure Swing Adsorption technology (PSA) will be used to separate and purify carbon monoxide from the company’s calcium carbide furnace exhaust. The high purity carbon monoxide will then be directed to the synthesis of glycol.

According to PKU Pioneer, this is the first CO purification plant in China used in glycol synthesis with a calcium carbide furnace exhaust.

Xinjiang Tianye (Group) Co., Ltd is a major state-owned enterprise in China and is among the China Top 500 largest enterprises. It is also a leading enterprise in the calcium carbide industry and has produced one million tons calcium carbide in 2010.

The project, which involves 28000Nm3/h of calcium carbide furnace exhaust, is located in the Industrial Zone of ShiHeZi in XinJiang province and it will produce 50,000 tons glycol per year, gasworld China understands.

PKU Pioneer commented, “The exhaust gas from the calcium carbide furnace is a very complicated mixture of different gases. Carbon monoxide is very rich in the calcium carbide furnace exhaust, accounting for more than 80%. The impurities include N2, H2, CH4 and sulphide. Therefore, separation and purification of high purity CO from calcium carbide furnace exhaust cannot be achieved by general technology.”

“PKU PIONEER, with our unique technology, will provide Tianye one set of PSA-CO equipment with a capacity of 6000Nm3/h and one set of PSA-H2 equipment with a capacity of 16000Nm3/h. The purity of CO is higher than 99% and H2 is higher than 99.6%.”

Construction of the project has already started, gasworld China understands, and is scheduled to start operation by the end of 2012.
