Origin and MOL partner up on green ammonia MoU

Origin Energy (Origin) and international shipping company, Mitsui O.S.K. Lines Ltd. (MOL) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to explore supply chain development opportunities for export-scale green ammonia in Australia.

A joint feasibility study that is due for completion by December 2021 will investigate how Australian green ammonia projects could supply key downstream markets from 2026.

With ammonia being a carrier for hydrogen, exploring green ammonia possibilities will also help the green hydrogen industry. Growing demand for lower carbon fuels both overseas and domestically is seeing Origin progress with its export-scale green hydrogen opportunities.

Speaking about renewable energies and the $3.2m feasibility study into green ammonia production, Tracey Boyes, General Manager of Future Fuels, Origin, said, “Transport is one of the biggest opportunities globally to achieve emissions abatement through the use of green and renewable fuels such as hydrogen and ammonia.”
