NEW GREENHOUSE GAS REGULATION 

On January 1, 2010, 40CFR98 “The Mandatory Reporting of Greenhouse Gases Rule” went into effect. Companies that are large sources of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions are now required to report emissions to the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Some companies need to implement instrument monitoring of these emissions.

The instruments will require additional gas calibration standards including one or more of the following minor components: carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, hydrofluorocarbons, sulfur hexafluoride, and perfluorocarbons. The calibration standards need to have a two percent certification accuracy from low ppm (parts per million) to percent concentrations. Matheson Tri-Gas is proficient with certification of multi-component gas standards with any combination of these chemicals. Matheson produces most standards in several different grades and with the customary grade differentiation by certification accuracy and blend tolerance. Each cylinder of gas has a certificate of analysis complete with NIST traceability, shelf-life, and certified concentrations.

ELECTRICAL UTILITY REFINEMENTS 

Electric utility customers who adhere to 40CFR60 and 40CFR75 may require nitric oxide in nitrogen EPA Protocol standards that include minimal NO2 impurity, tighter blend tolerances, and guaranteed 24-month shelf lives. Matheson’s Low PPM NOx standards have these, as exemplified by the Company’s completion of a 10 ppm Nitric Oxide NIST NTRM in 2009.

Natural gas-fired electric utilities (regulated within 40CFR60) may require an “Ultra CEM Zero” grade of nitrogen for zeroing CO and NOx instruments when measuring less than 10 ppm concentrations on their Continuous Emissions Monitors. Matheson Nitrogen NANOCHEM® Grade is produced with carbon monoxide and NOx impurities < 10 ppb (parts per billion). The impurity concentration ensures that the zero gas does not exhibit a measurable pollutant concentration.
